Agape, agapae, or agapao is one of several Greek words that are
translated as the word Love in English. Phileo is another of these Greek
words. In the Bible agape and phileo are used in a conversation between
Jesus and Simon Peter. When it is read in the King James Version, in
English you see that Jesus asks Simon Peter if he loves (agape) him.
Peter replies, yes Lord, you know that I love (phileo) you. Jesus asks
once more using the word agape, Simon Peter replies again with phileo.
The third time the Lord asks him, Jesus uses the word phileo, and again
Simon Peter replied with the same. This usage of love in John 21:15-17
illustrates that love is not always the same, and that some love one way
and some love another way. John 3:16 is a very familiar Bible verse to
many, when Gods love for his creation is described here the word love
or agape is used. When Jesus commanded to love in John 15:12 it is the
Greek word agape that was used.
Agape is the love that a person experiences when they realize what has
been done for them. There is a peace that can only be brought about by
being loved this way by Jesus. Agapeace is the joy taken from the God
given desire to echo and reflect that Divine love. Agapeace is the
understanding that love's power to overcome is from its driving force,
will.
Love is more familiar to man in the emotional sense. But love, driven
by will is what is seen in the eyes of a rescue worker on his 25th hr of
digging through rubble to find his friends. It is found in the heart of
mothers on both sides of an adoption. It is heard in a 4am phone call to
a pastor, it’s working two jobs for your family, it’s making your son get
his first job. But its most precious and sacred example is found at
Golgotha, its Divine love driven by will that Jesus exemplified in
suffering death by choice, and neglecting to summon legions of angels
to destroy his executioners.
Likewise, peace is more familiar to man as being relaxed. Peace is
thought to be what we experience when the kids finally go to bed. But
when you think of how it is properly used it is when there is no more
fighting, like when a war ends. A spiritual peace is brought about when
a person realizes that Jesus alone ended the fight over their soul and
this realizaton allows them to obey his instructions for their life.
Emotional love is an extraordinary gift, and I for one would never want
to be without it. But, the will is where loves power comes from, it’s
driving force. When emotions fade; its will driven love that conquers
disappointment, disaster, betrayal, adversity, fear, struggle, offense,
and even hate. Its will driven love that burned a path through this world
and into heaven. It is a choice.
